15 Tamil Nadu Fishermen Return From Sri Lanka as Stalin Renews Katchatheevu Demand

The chief minister argues retrieving the islet is the only lasting fix, faulting the Union government for not pressing Colombo.

Overview

  • The 15 fishermen landed in Chennai on October 3 and were received by officials for medical checks before being transported to their hometowns.
  • The group comprised men arrested on February 19, July 13, July 21 and August 8, reportedly over alleged maritime boundary violations while fishing.
  • Speaking in Ramanathapuram, M. K. Stalin said only taking back Katchatheevu would permanently stop arrests and harassment of Tamil Nadu fishers.
  • He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, noting the MEA did not challenge Sri Lanka’s assertion that Katchatheevu belongs to it.
  • BJP and AIADMK leaders pushed back, attacking the DMK government’s record and questioning its handling of the fishermen issue and related controversies.
