14-Year-Old Critically Injured Surfing on Bronx Train, Woman Killed at Union Square

The NYPD’s drone patrols paired with an MTA campaign target a surge in subway surfing after two recent incidents this year

Overview

  • The 14-year-old fell from the roof of a northbound No. 5 train near Baychester Ave. at about 3:15 p.m. Monday and remains in critical but stable condition at Jacobi Medical Center.
  • A 24-year-old woman jumped onto the tracks at Union Square just after 10:20 p.m. Monday and was struck by a northbound L train, leading to an hour-long service suspension.
  • Police charged a 17-year-old with reckless endangerment and trespass in the Bronx incident and are searching for a third teenager involved.
  • Six subway surfing deaths occurred in 2024 and two have been reported so far in 2025, with the NYPD making 79 related arrests this year.
  • In response to rising incidents, the MTA rolled out a “Ride Inside and Stay Alive” campaign featuring BMX rider Nigel Sylvester, and the NYPD has begun drone patrols over above-ground lines.
