14-Year-Old Charged After Imitation Gun Triggers Lockdown at Sherwood Park High School

The youth was released on conditions with a Sept. 23 court date under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Overview

  • Police say a teacher called 911 just before 2 p.m. after seeing a student with a gun in class, prompting a lockdown at Archbishop Jordan Catholic High School on Emerald Drive.
  • Strathcona County RCMP responded with a heavy presence, seized what they believe to be an imitation firearm, and took a 14-year-old into custody.
  • The teen faces three charges: assault with a weapon, using an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
  • RCMP reported no physical injuries and noted an assault charge does not require an injury to have occurred.
  • The school division apologized for a delay in notifying parents due to a communications failure and said crisis-support staff will be available at the school in the coming days.
