14 Hospitalized in Carbon Monoxide Incident at Yale Construction Site
One worker remains in critical condition after exposure to high levels of carbon monoxide due to improper ventilation and lack of monitoring.
- 14 people, including nine construction workers and five university employees, were hospitalized due to carbon monoxide poisoning at a Yale University-owned building under construction.
- One of the workers was found unconscious and is in critical condition in a hospital's hyperbaric chamber in Brooklyn, New York.
- The incident occurred when the workers were using a propane-fueled saw to cut concrete in an area that was not properly ventilated and without using carbon monoxide monitors.
- Carbon monoxide levels at the site were measured to be about 10 times the safe amount, leading to the evacuation of the construction site and an adjacent building.
- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident and a stop work order has been issued for the site by New Haven's building inspector.
