14 Former N.C. State Athletes File State Lawsuit Alleging Abuse by Ex–Sports Medicine Director

The new complaint moves the case to Wake County court following years of alleged oversight failures.

Overview

  • The consolidated suit was filed Wednesday in Wake County Superior Court and names nine defendants, including former director of sports medicine Robert Murphy Jr.
  • The filing alleges Murphy inappropriately touched athletes’ genitals during massages and closely watched them during urine collection for drug tests.
  • Plaintiffs say concerns reached senior athletics leaders such as former athletic director Debbie Yow as early as 2012, yet Murphy continued treating athletes and was promoted in 2018.
  • Attorneys for the athletes dismissed earlier federal Title IX cases and refiled in state court with 11 additional plaintiffs, for a total of 14 men.
  • Murphy’s defense has moved to dismiss on sovereign-immunity and timeliness grounds; N.C. State has declined substantive comment, and Murphy was placed on leave in January 2022 before being fired later that year.
