14 Cows Dead, 30 Survive Connecticut Highway Truck Rollover En Route to Ohio

Surviving cows cleared to continue journey to Ohio; Driver of overturned truck uninjured with the cause of accident still under investigation.

  • Thirty out of the 44 cows that were being transported from Maine to Ohio survived a truck rollover on a Connecticut highway. The surviving cows underwent veterinary examinations and were found to be in satisfying health, therefore they were cleared to continue their journey to Ohio.
  • Fourteen cows died in the incident; eight were killed instantly as the truck flipped over, while six others had to be euthanized due to the severity of their injuries. The decision to euthanize was made in coordination with the owner of the cows and was undertaken to reduce their suffering.
  • The rollover of the cattle trailer, which occurred on an exit ramp off Interstate 84 in Newtown, Connecticut, is being investigated by local authorities. The cause of the accident remains unknown, but it is noted that it was foggy at the time of the crash.
  • The driver of the truck managed to escape unscathed and an infraction for failure to maintain a lane was issued by the state police. In the aftermath of the accident, state police closed off the westbound side of the highway for several hours.
  • Per the regulations of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the meat from the dead cows is not deemed fit for human consumption. Despite a complex response due to the size of the cows, rescue crews were able to prevent the cattle from running onto the highway using temporary fencing and trucks to corral them.
