137 Gaza Flotilla Detainees Land in Istanbul as Abuse Claims Surface

A Swedish consular visit recounts harsh detention conditions that Israel disputes.

Overview

  • Israel’s navy intercepted roughly 40 Gaza-bound boats this week and detained more than 450 people under its naval blockade.
  • Turkey’s foreign ministry said 137 deported participants arrived in Istanbul, including 36 Turks and nationals from the United States, Italy, Malaysia and other countries, with further expulsions pending.
  • Deported activists alleged mistreatment of Greta Thunberg, saying she was shoved and forced to wear or kiss an Israeli flag and paraded during a visit by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.
  • Legal group Adalah reported detainees were denied lawyers, water, medication and toilets and were kept kneeling with zip-tied hands for hours, accusations Israel called “complete lies.”
  • Sweden’s embassy said it met Thunberg and was told of dehydration, insufficient food and water and rashes suspected from bedbugs, while Israel maintained detainees were safe and in good health; Italy said 26 of its citizens were on the deportation flight and 15 remain in custody.
