133 Migrants Rescued Off Canary Islands, Two Confirmed Dead

Rescue agencies credited two merchant ships with locating a crowded cayuco far southeast of El Hierro during a weather-delayed operation.

  • The guardamar Urania intercepted a cayuco with 108 people, including 20 women and three minors, at 00:55 Canary time roughly 148 miles southeast of El Hierro.
  • One person was found dead on that vessel and another who was in serious condition later died, according to the authorities.
  • A separate boat about four miles south of Gran Canaria was escorted to Arguineguín, where emergency teams reported generally good condition and made one minor hospital transfer.
  • Officials thanked the merchant ships SARAH M and bulk carrier EUROSTAR for assisting the cayuco, and separate rescues recovered 26 people near southeast Mallorca and 13 near Formentera.
