The boy, who was 12 at the time of the crime, shot the employee several times with an AR-style rifle after a fight between the employee and the boy's uncle.
The boy retrieved the gun from his uncle's vehicle and opened fire in the parking lot of the Sonic Drive-In.
The boy's uncle, Angel Gomez, was also arrested after the shooting and later indicted on a charge of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
The boy will start his sentence in the custody of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and may later be transferred to the state’s adult prison system.
