Overview

  • In early July, Maharees Conservation Association volunteers Kate and Jon Gay recovered the sealed wine bottle and its note during a cleanup at Scraggane Bay.
  • The bottle drifted for more than 4,600 days across the Atlantic after being cast from Bell Island, Newfoundland, in September 2012.
  • A Facebook post by the Maharees group prompted Anita Squires to confirm she wrote the note within an hour of its discovery.
  • Anita and Brad Squires, who penned the note during a picnic on Bell Island, married in 2016 and now have three children.
  • The Irish finders and the Canadian couple are planning transatlantic visits and joint initiatives to tackle coastal erosion and climate adaptation in their communities.
