• Kate and Jon Gay discovered a weathered wine bottle containing a handwritten love note during a beach cleanup on Scraggane Bay on July 7.
• The bottle drifted across the Atlantic for more than 4,600 days and nearly 2,000 miles after Brad and Anita Squires cast it off Bell Island in September 2012.
• Maharees Conservation Association chair Martha Farrell’s Facebook post about the find went viral, and Anita Squires confirmed she wrote the note within an hour.
• Now married since 2016 and living in Newfoundland with three children, the Squires have reconnected with the Maharees group over their sentimental message.
• The conservation association is leveraging the story to forge partnerships on coastal erosion and has invited Canadian and Irish members to exchange visits.
