13 Pets Rescued From Debris-Filled Vista Apartment in Four-Day Operation

Officers are still monitoring the unit with traps and cameras for any remaining animals.

Overview

  • San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement, assisted by the county sheriff, entered the apartment on Oct. 1 after the landlord reported not seeing the tenant for weeks.
  • Rescuers worked through floor-to-ceiling debris where dogs had tunneled through trash, requiring additional staff, large dumpsters and deep cleaning over several days.
  • Eleven dogs and two cats, many with flea infestations, skin issues and overgrown nails, were recovered from the two-bedroom unit.
  • All animals are receiving medical care at SDHS’s Oceanside campus under Emergency Boarding status as the investigation continues.
  • The intake added to record crowding at SDHS, which is caring for 792 dogs, and the shelter is urging adoptions, fostering and donations, with $50 fees for adult dogs and cats through Oct. 15 via BISSELL’s Empty the Shelters campaign.
