13 Arrested, 4 Officers Hurt in Boston Pro-Palestinian Rally Clash as Police Release Names and Charges

City officials vow prosecutions following a police clash that injured four officers during a downtown march.

Overview

  • Police say a crowd of about 200–300 moved from Boston Common to Tremont and Winter streets and blocked emergency vehicles as officers responded to an unrelated call.
  • Officials reported protesters surrounded and kicked a marked cruiser and ignited red smoke devices and flares, with video showing shoving and wrestling as officers cleared the roadway.
  • Boston police released the names of 13 defendants; Tufts student Roder Atwood, 21, was arraigned and held on $10,000 bail, accused of breaking an officer’s nose and charged with assault and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, among other counts.
  • The remaining 12, all from the Boston area and ages 19 to 28, face charges including resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace, with arraignments held Wednesday and continuing Thursday in Boston Municipal Court.
  • Four officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries, two were hospitalized, and an internal investigation continues into reports of damaged or removed equipment such as body cameras, radios and bicycles; police linked the rally’s organization to area Students for Justice in Palestine groups.
