12-Year-Old Identified in Two Deliberate Fires at Marblehead Church

Investigators describe the bathroom fires as isolated with minimal damage.

Overview

  • Marblehead police and fire, assisted by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, determined the fires were intentionally set during consecutive 11 a.m. Masses at Our Lady Star of the Sea.
  • Officials said an unnamed pre-teen is the sole suspect, and a state spokesperson said the juvenile took responsibility.
  • Both small fires were quickly extinguished in the church bathroom and caused no permanent damage.
  • Authorities have not released the juvenile’s identity or said whether any charges will be filed.
  • State officials said a separate overnight church fire in nearby Beverly is unrelated to the Marblehead incidents.
