12-Year-Old Boy Fatally Struck by Falling Tree During Michigan Field Trip

The accident happened Thursday afternoon while students were learning how to make a fire during an overnight camping trip.
Chaperones reported hearing a loud crack before the 20-foot tree with a rotted trunk fell and struck Carter on the head.
Carter was airlifted to Mott's Children Hospital at the University of Michigan, where he later died from his injuries.
Howell Nature Center has been closed to allow staff to process the event, and the community has expressed deep condolences to Carter's family.
