Overview

  • A speeding van carrying 13 devotees collided with a motorcycle and plunged into an open well in Mandsaur district, killing 12 people, including the biker and a rescuer.
  • Four survivors, including a three-year-old girl and a ten-year-old boy, were rescued and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
  • The rescue operation, lasting nearly five hours, was complicated by toxic gas from an illegal LPG cylinder in the van and required specialized equipment to remove gas and pump water from the well.
  • Authorities have launched an investigation into the illegal LPG cylinder installation and the driver's negligence, which are suspected to have contributed to the fatalities.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced ex-gratia payments of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
