Overview
- The National Gallery of Art said Wednesday it received $116 million from the Mitchell P. Rales Family Foundation to fund its Art Across the Nation loans in perpetuity.
- The gift is the largest program endowment in the museum’s history and was timed to the United States’ 250th anniversary.
- Launched as a pilot last spring, the initiative lends up to ten works to ten small and midsize museums while covering travel, installation, insurance, and marketing costs.
- The first year drew an estimated 900,000 visitors across ten host sites that showed works by artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Rembrandt, and Mark Rothko.
- The current two-year loans run through 2027, with a new cycle planned for 2027 to 2029 and partner museums to be announced.
