  • The Codex Sassoon, a 1,100-year-old Hebrew Bible, sold for $38 million, breaking the world record for a manuscript sold at auction.
  • Former U.S. Ambassador Alfred H. Moses purchased the Codex Sassoon on behalf of the American Friends of ANU Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv, where it will be permanently housed.
  • The Codex Sassoon contains nearly the entire Hebrew Bible, with just 12 missing pages, and is believed to date back to between 880 and 960.
  • The previous record for a manuscript sold at auction was $30.8 million for Leonardo da Vinci's Codex Leicester in 1994.
  • The Codex Sassoon was previously owned by art collector Jacqui Safra, who had recently had it carbon dated to confirm its age before putting it up for auction.
