The flight was diverted to Budapest where medical staff attempted to revive the child for 40 minutes but were unsuccessful.
Initial reports incorrectly reported the child as a boy but the child was a girl who had been ill since birth and was unable to move.
The Turkish Airlines flight was traveling from Istanbul to John F. Kennedy International Airport when the medical emergency occurred.
The child's death was confirmed after the plane landed in Budapest.
