Overview

  • The infant, identified as Esther Vitória, was hit while sleeping in a stroller inside a friend’s home in Cidade Tiradentes around 11:50 p.m. on December 31.
  • Family members discovered a wound on her abdomen and later found a projectile at the scene next to the stroller.
  • She was treated at UPA Tiradentes and transferred to Hospital Santa Marcelina, stayed overnight for observation, and has been discharged to recover at home on antibiotics.
  • The case was registered as discharge of a firearm and bodily injury at the 49th Police District in São Mateus, and the projectile was collected for analysis.
  • Investigators say the working hypothesis is a shot fired into the air that fell and ricocheted off a barbecue cart before striking the child, and no shooter has been identified.
