Overview
- The MBTA began an 11-day suspension of Orange Line service on Thursday, Aug. 20, shutting trains between Oak Grove and Back Bay so crews can perform track and signal upgrades.
- To replace trains the T is running free shuttle buses between Oak Grove and North Station, offering fare-free Commuter Rail segments and increasing Green Line frequency for downtown access.
- Riders should budget substantially more travel time — the MBTA warns some trips may take about 70 extra minutes — and some commuters report crowding and heat concerns on alternate services.
- The agency says concentrated multi-day closures are faster and more efficient than piecemeal repairs; it has scheduled further outages including a five-day Forest Hills–Back Bay suspension for Sept. 10–14 and multi-line weekend work Sept. 19–20.
- The shutdown follows recent reliability problems such as a Chinatown track fault that forced short-term suspensions and temporary free fares, and it could strain bus capacity and downtown transfers while officials complete upgrades.
