10 Children Drown in Rain-Filled Pits in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra

Officials cite rain-swollen excavations plus missing barriers as preventable dangers.

Overview

  • Six Class 5 students from Chigeli in Kurnool district drowned after entering a rainwater-filled quarry pit about one kilometre from their school, police said.
  • One boy stayed out of the water and raised the alarm, after which villagers and a shepherd helped retrieve the bodies; police registered a case and opened an investigation.
  • Police said the children were not swimmers and did not realise overnight rains had raised the water level in the pit.
  • In Darwha, Yavatmal district, four children aged 10 to 14 died in a water-filled construction pit for a railway flyover; investigators are determining whether they fell in or attempted to swim.
  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu promised support to the bereaved families, while Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy urged stronger precautions to prevent repeat incidents.
