1 Killed, 3 Injured in Midair Collision Near Colorado’s Fort Morgan Airport

NTSB investigators now lead a probe into approach procedures at the uncontrolled airfield.

Overview

  • A Cessna 172 and an Extra EA‑300 collided around 10:40 a.m. local time while both were attempting to land at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport.
  • Local authorities said the Cessna was on final approach when it was struck; both aircraft crashed in nearby fields and caught fire.
  • Two occupants of the Cessna were treated for minor injuries at the scene, one person from the Extra was hospitalized, and the other occupant of that plane died at the site.
  • The airport was closed as deputies, police, state patrol, fire, and EMS responded; officials have not released the names of those involved.
  • The FAA and NTSB are collecting evidence including flight-path and video data, and the airport had been hosting an aerobatics competition that officials say was unrelated to the crash.
