August Egg Company Recalls 1.7 Million Eggs as Salmonella Sickens 79

Health officials have linked the recalled eggs to a multistate Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak that has hospitalized 21 people.

Overview

  • The recall applies to brown cage-free and certified organic eggs with sell-by dates from March 4 to June 19, covering shipments made from February 3 through May 15.
  • Cartons marked with plant codes P-6562 or CA5330 are included in the recall regardless of label or retailer.
  • Recalled eggs were sold under brands such as Clover, First Street, Marketside and Sunnyside at chains including Walmart, Safeway, Save Mart, FoodMaxx and Ralphs in nine states.
  • Officials warn the true scope of the outbreak may be larger than reported since many mild Salmonella cases go undiagnosed or untested.
  • August Egg Company has paused fresh egg sales, redirected its eggs to a pasteurization facility and launched an internal food safety review.
