Lego Debuts Smart Play ‘Smart Brick’ at CES With Star Wars Sets Opening for Preorder Jan. 9

Miniaturized electronics turn a classic 2x4 brick into a screen-free interactive hub.

Overview

  • The Smart Play platform centers on a 2x4 Smart Brick with sensors, LEDs, a tiny speaker and a custom chip that reacts to motion, light, proximity and tagged pieces.
  • Launch begins with three LEGO Star Wars starter sets—Luke’s Red Five X-Wing, Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter, and a Throne Room Duel & A‑Wing set—shipping March 1 after preorders open Jan. 9.
  • Reported prices list the TIE Fighter at €69.99, the X‑Wing at €89.99 and the Throne Room set at €159.99, each including at least one Smart Brick, Smart Minifigures and Smart Tags.
  • Smart Bricks detect position and orientation using Lego’s Neighbour Position Measurement system, talk to each other over the Bluetooth‑based BrickNet, and charge inductively without cables or screens.
  • Hands-on demos highlight roughly one hour of play per charge, an optional parental app for volume and usage checks, and a limitation that behavior follows the coded Smart Tag in use.
