The college was established in 1943, in Pune by the Deccan Education Society. In 1944, Chandrashekhar Agashe, the Managing Agent of the Brihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate Ltd., was instrumental in getting a donation of ₹2,00,000/- for the college from the Syndicate, hence the name Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce.
