U.S. Public Backing for Immigration Hits New High as Trump’s Handling Draws Disapproval

Waning enthusiasm for mass deportations has coincided with widespread approval of legal pathways to citizenship.

Overview

  • Gallup data show 79% of U.S. adults now view immigration as a good thing for the country, up from 64% a year ago and marking a high in the 25-year trend.
  • The share of adults who want immigration levels decreased fell from 55% to 30% over the past year.
  • Only 38% support deporting all undocumented immigrants, down from 47%, even as strong Hispanic backing for deportations rose by 11 percentage points between May and July.
  • Only 35% of Americans approve of President Trump’s handling of immigration, compared with 62% who disapprove of his approach.
  • About 85% of respondents favor pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who meet certain requirements, including those brought to the U.S. as children.
