The court-approved agreement compensates users of select French-door models for evaporator coil faults that caused excessive frost and cooling failures

  • A federal court granted final approval for the class-action settlement on May 13 after an objection and opt-out period closed March 21
  • The deal covers Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag French-door refrigerators sold from 2012 to 2019 with defective evaporator coils blamed for frost buildup, spoiled food and excess noise
  • Eligible consumers—including original buyers, gift recipients and those who acquired units through builders or appliance bundles—can seek up to 75% of purchase price for failures within three years and up to $300 for older malfunctions
  • Claimants must provide proof of ownership, repair or service receipts and evidence that issues occurred within eight years of purchase and before January 31, 2025
  • All claims must be filed through the official portal at coolingsettlement.com by 11:59 p.m. local time on June 18, 2025
